Reversal of Vasectomy

Reversal of Vasectomy Patient Information for Prof Webb’s Patients

The procedure is performed under general anesthetic, through a scrotal or groin incision on each side. The ends of the vas are found, “freshened” and rejoined together by micro surgery. The operation is very delicate and takes 1-2 hours. It is usually performed as a day case but you may stay in hospital overnight.

If you regularly take medications to thin the blood, such as aspirin, warfarin or Plavix, you must inform your surgeon and cease taking the medication prior to your operation.

You will be asked to put on a white theatre gown and given anti-embolic leg stockings to wear. You must not have anything to eat or drink, not even water, for at least 6 hours prior to surgery.

After vasectomy reversal

  • You will wake up in the recovery room or on the ward. A nurse will take your blood pressure regularly
  • A drip will be in your arm to give you fluids. This will be removed when you are drinking well
  • You may experience some minor swelling, bruising and discomfort. The wound may ooze slightly. This is not a problem
  • You should wear firm underpants (brief/jockey type) day and night for a week, to support the scrotum and increase comfort
  • Panadol or similar may be taken for discomfort
  • You may shower any time after the procedure
  • Plan to rest for 1-2 days after the procedure
  • Strenuous physical activity should be avoided for 2 weeks. Your activity level may increase, as you feel comfortable. If you have any queries regarding the level of exercise, please phone your urology nurse
  • You can return to having sex whenever you feel comfortable but there should be no direct pressure or trauma to the region of surgery
  • Your ejaculation will be tested (semen analysis) to see if sperm has returned
