Shockwave Lithotripsy

Associate Professor Webb trained in ESWL in Mainz in Germany on the original HM3 lithotripter. He performed first ESWL in the United Kingdom with Mr J E A Wickham in 1984.

Between them they developed the early indications for shortwave lithotripsy and it’s relationship to percutaneous renal surgery, either in combination of separately.

These clinical studies and guidelines formed a large part of Associate Professor Webb’s Doctor of Medicine thesis. In 1989 he was the founding Director of ESWL at Cotham Private Hospital, when the first private ESWL lithotripter service was established in Victoria.
